About the Art
Although artists’ depictions of this famous battle are not uncommon, the focus is more centered on the horrible, bloody conflict that has made it the subject of many books and Hollywood films. However, on December 24, 1944, at 00:00 hours, hunkered waist deep in the snow, half frozen amidst a barrage of bullets, bombs, and artillery shells that brought death and dismemberment everywhere, some soldiers managed to pull themselves out of their foxholes to shake hands with their fellow brothers-in-arms and even put up makeshift Christmas trees—a bittersweet Christmas celebration.
Then, on the afternoon of December 26th, cheers rose up from the battered battalions, as belated Christmas gifts of food, ammunition, and medical supplies fell from the skies (actually, from C-47 aircraft)! To us, this is a constant reminder that even in the darkest of times, the light of the human spirit always shines through.
